This is a no BS Lightroom turbo start!<\/p>\n<h2>Non Technical Lightroom Getting Started Guide<\/h2>\n<p>Lightroom is broken up into Modules. This is where all your photos live. This is where you import the photos and do all the boring stuff like keywords and collections etc. It might be boring, but a little effort here will pay off in spades later on down the road, You&#8217;ll see. You can sleep at night knowing that all your photos are safely tucked away and labeled so you can find them in a rabbits blink. When you get a bit more experienced, you&#8217;ll also find that most of this can be automated.<\/p>\n<h3>The Develop Module<\/h3>\n<p>This is where the party&#8217;s at after everyone has left the library. \u00a0The develop module is where you take those dull images and turn them into works of art. This is your digital darkroom (Lightroom) where you can be creative. A lot of this can also be automated if you are in a rush. In as few words as possible, here is how to work in Lightroom. Click the Arrow in the lower left corner to expand it. Don&#8217;t worry about all the options for now, we will walk through the steps you need. Look on the top and you will see 3 options for the import workflow.: 1. Grab Photos <strong>From<\/strong>\u00a0| 2. What to <strong>do<\/strong>\u00a0with them | 3. You can bring them in from your computer if you like, but for the sake of this tutorial, I&#8217;m going to assume that you want to bring them in from your camera card reader. Click that option (EOS_DIGITAL is mine.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10735\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_03.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_03\" width=\"262\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note: If you can&#8217;t see the photos from your subfolders, click on the panel that says &#8220;to&#8221; and choose the Include Subfolders option at the bottom<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-18-at-7.25.15-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10771 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-18-at-7.25.15-PM-e1442629617570.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-09-18 at 7.25.15 PM\" width=\"222\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the middle top, choose an option from importing. Copy and Copy as DNG are the only options from a camera or card. To keep it simple, we are going to use Copy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10736\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_04.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_04\" width=\"315\" height=\"51\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_04.jpg 315w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_04-300x49.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the top right, you will see an option that says &#8220;TO&#8221; This is where we are copying the photos (and videos) to.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10737\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_05.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_05\" width=\"289\" height=\"63\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Under the &#8220;to&#8221; options, I recommend choosing the subfolder and <strong>Into One Folder<\/strong> option and giving it a name.\u00a0(this will prevent those horrible nested folders by date, that are a pest later on)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10738\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_06.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_06\" width=\"252\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_06.jpg 252w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_06-250x155.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, locate the folder that you want to put your photos. If you are just starting, it&#8217;s a good idea to have a strategy and stick with it, because you will be using this structure for a very long time.<\/p>\n<h2>What do I do for a digital asset management strategy?<\/h2>\n<p>What we are doing right now, is creating a folder structure\u00a0on your disk drive. Lightroom doesn&#8217;t care where the photos are to nicely catalog them. But this structure is for you, to help you keep your photos organized, trust me, it&#8217;s worth the extra effort. \u00a0I normally create a top level folder called photos. Under this a create categories that I&#8217;ll use such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Places<\/li>\n<li>People<\/li>\n<li>Events<\/li>\n<li>Clients<\/li>\n<li>etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll then create folders as I import photos under these categories, as subcategories: <strong>Places<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boston<\/li>\n<li>California<\/li>\n<li>New York<\/li>\n<li>London<\/li>\n<li>etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use\u00a0whatever categories you think you&#8217;ll need. You can always add more later or change them<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>WARNING! If you do change folder names or image locations, do it through Lightroom or you will break the file association. In other words, if you change a location through Lightroom, the image will move on your computer = good! If you move it directly on your computer, Lightroom won&#8217;t know where it is = bad!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ok, back on track, I think you needed that bit of extra info if you are new to DAM ( Digital Asset Management AKA Managing your photos) Choose a folder where you want your photos to go to<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10739\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_07.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_07\" width=\"256\" height=\"854\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_07.jpg 256w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_07-90x300.jpg 90w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You have now set up: Where<strong> from<\/strong> &gt; What<strong> to Do<\/strong> with photos &gt; Where <strong>to go<\/strong> In the main window, choose the photos to add to Lightroom. Usually you will go with the default, which is all the photos on the card.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10740\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_08.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_08\" width=\"604\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_08.jpg 700w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_08-600x384.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_08-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you turn on the option &#8220;Don&#8217;t import suspected Duplicates and photos are already in Lightroom, they will be greyed out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10766\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/dont-import.jpg\" alt=\"dont-import\" width=\"261\" height=\"127\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click the import button<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10741\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_09.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_09\" width=\"137\" height=\"36\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your photos will now be copied into Lightroom and you will return to the Library module where you can watch\u00a0your photos getting sucked into Lightroom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10742\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_10.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_10\" width=\"604\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_10.jpg 700w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_10-600x322.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_10-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All your photos are now safely tucked into Lightroom. Next step is finding them.<\/p>\n<h1>Organizing your Photos in Lightroom<\/h1>\n<p>At the top left you&#8217;ll see the Navigator which is a thumbnail of the selected photo. Under that is the Catalog. The options that you&#8217;ll use are either Previous import, which will limit the view to just the last batch of photos you bought into Lightroom. Or you can choose All\u00a0Photographs, to show every photo currently in Lightroom. If photos seem to be missing, click All Photographs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10743\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_11.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_11\" width=\"357\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_11.jpg 357w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_11-278x300.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 357px) 100vw, 357px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next block\u00a0down shows the Folders View. You will see a list of drives that have photos in them that Lightroom is managing (in the Library). Currently attached drives are lit up. For this, we use<strong>\u00a0Collections<\/strong>. Collections have tons of advantages because they don&#8217;t actually contain photos, just a reference to the photos, this way we can have the same photo in different Collections without making multiple copies of the same photo. Trust me, multiple copies of the same photo is a bad thing and can get very confusing as well as quickly filling up you drive with duplicate photos. Select all the Photos that you want to put in the collection. Click in the Grid and press Cmd\/Ctrl+A to select all. At a bare minimum, I add some keywords to help find the photos later. You can select an entire Collection and add simple keywords to them all in just a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10749\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_17.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_17\" width=\"268\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see little badges on photos that have metadata. <a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10750\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_18.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_18\" width=\"46\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 There is a lot of other metadata stuff you can do to your photos now if you like. If you want to sort through them and find the good ones, you can use things like ratings, flags and labels. I have touched on this on the 15 minute video, so you can watch that when you&#8217;re ready to do more organization. When you want to go more advanced you can add meta data on import etc. You can even create metadata templates that add a ton of info to a photo in a single click. <a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/video\/products\/Lightroom6.htm\">(All of this is explained in my 13 hour comprehensive Lightroom training video)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s select a photograph and have some fun with it, enough of this organizational stuff. \u00a0Click a photo in the Filmstrip. This is where you make all the image adjustments that could be as simple as cropping, lightening or darkening photos or as advanced as localized dodging and burning, black and white, special effects and even retouching. Most of your adjustments can be made in this panel and it&#8217;s certainly a good place to get started. There are a ton of other option that you will learn later as you go deeper into the rabbit hole. For now, just get familiar with the basic adjustments. If you have used Camera Raw before in Photoshop, these settings are identical. Why Lightroom? At it&#8217;s most basic, the Library module. <a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/lightroom-vs-bridge\">Or see a more detailed video on why Lightroom.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Basic Lightroom Adjustments<\/h2>\n<p>The sliders are broken into 3 groups<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WB: White balance<\/li>\n<li>Tone: Making the photo or portions of the photo lighter and darker<\/li>\n<li>Presence: Grittiness and color<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I usually start with white balance, then move on to Exposure to set overall brightness.\u00a0Then grab Highlights and shadows to recover details in the highlights and shadows (Expand the dynamic range).\u00a0Set whites and Blacks to give contrast to the photo. Presets are like little recipes that can be applied to any photograph in a single click. You can make your own, or add in ones that you get from other people.<\/p>\n<h3>Saving a preset<\/h3>\n<p>Click on the + on the Presets panel<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_26.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10758\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lightroom-basics-tutorial_26.jpg\" alt=\"lightroom-basics-tutorial_26\" width=\"246\" height=\"34\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You will see the New Develop Preset panel. \u00a0 Give it a name and a folder, default id User Presets. Notice you can choose which adjustments to include in the preset. While you can create web galleries, slideshows, print and even make books in the different modules in Lightroom, let&#8217;s do a simple task. Export a Photo that we can share online on Social Media. There are a ton of options in here including the option to create export presets and multiple images. I actually created a Facebook preset, Ill break it down.<\/p>\n<p>File image format choose jpg and a medium quality.<\/p>\n<p>I limited the size to 1600 on the longest edge, thats big enough for people to enjoy without becoming so huge it bogs down the entire internet.<\/p>\n<p>I also include a watermark. I think it&#8217;s always a good idea to protect your public images with watermarks.
